Recommended radon test kits
Testing is the only way to know your home's radon level. EPA recommends fixing your home if radon is 4 pCi/L or higher, and considering a fix between 2 and 4 pCi/L.
Short-term charcoal test kits
Short-term tests stay in your home for 2 to 90 days, depending on the device; charcoal kits are usually exposed for a few days and mailed to a lab. They're the quickest way to screen a home. Keep windows and outside doors closed as directed during the test.

Long-term alpha-track test kits
Long-term tests stay in place for more than 90 days. Because radon levels change from day to day and season to season, EPA says a long-term test gives a better idea of your year-round average.

Continuous digital radon detectors
Digital detectors run continuously and display your radon level over time, which is useful for watching changes or checking a home after mitigation. For real estate or confirming a high result, follow EPA's testing guidance.

How to test
- Test in the lowest lived-in level of your home (for example, a basement you use, or the first floor).
- Follow the kit's instructions exactly, including test length and mailing it to the lab promptly.
- Place the test away from drafts, high heat, high humidity and exterior walls.
What to do with your result
- Below 2 pCi/L: retest every couple of years or after renovations.
- 2 to 4 pCi/L: EPA says consider fixing your home.
- 4 pCi/L or higher: EPA recommends fixing your home. Confirm with a second test, then contact a certified radon mitigation professional. A typical fix is a sub-slab vent fan system.
- On a private well? Consider testing your well water for radon too.
